Three common use scenarios

Driving as a visitor

Document: a current overseas driving licence. Translation: source language to English. Receiver/use: a police officer or other authority may need to understand the licence during lawful driving. Boundary: permission to drive depends on the state or territory, licence status, visa or residency circumstances and applicable time limits. Next step: check the relevant transport authority, then send both sides and name the state or territory.

Renting a vehicle

Document: overseas licence plus English translation where requested. Receiver/use: the rental company assesses driver eligibility and its booking conditions. Boundary: a NAATI-certified translation does not guarantee a booking, vehicle class or insurance cover. Next step: ask the rental company what it requires, then send us the licence and booking location.

Applying for an Australian licence

Document: overseas licence and any identity or driving-history evidence requested. Receiver/use: the state or territory licensing authority. Boundary: conversion eligibility, tests, deadlines and accepted translation sources vary. NSW conversion requirements can differ from ordinary driving use. Next step: check the authority’s current instructions before ordering and tell us the exact application.

Australia does not have one nationwide overseas-licence rule

Driving and licence conversion are controlled by state and territory authorities. Requirements can change according to where the licence was issued, whether the holder is visiting or residing in Australia, how long they have lived in the jurisdiction, and whether the task is ordinary driving or licence conversion.

Follow the current instructions from the relevant state or territory transport authority. For example, see the Queensland Government overseas driving guidance. The official authority—not the translation provider—decides driving eligibility, conversion requirements and accepted evidence.

Country-specific commercial pages

Translation is not an IDP, certified copy or licence approval

A NAATI-certified translation, an International Driving Permit, a certified copy, Notary Public work and an Australian licence application are different. An IDP’s availability and use depend on the issuing country and the Australian jurisdiction. Translation does not turn an invalid, expired, suspended or otherwise unusable licence into a valid licence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a driving licence translation cost?

Standard Taiwan and mainland China licences are AUD $20; Hong Kong and Macau are AUD $30; Malaysia is AUD $46. Other formats and countries require a quote.

How quickly can it be completed?

Many standard licences can be completed the same day. Urgent 10–60 minute service may be available for eligible documents. The written quote confirms the deadline.

Do I need to post the original licence?

Clear colour images of both sides are normally sufficient for translation. A police officer, rental company or licensing authority may separately require the valid original.

Is a NAATI translation accepted everywhere in Australia?

No universal guarantee applies. The receiving institution and the relevant state or territory rules determine whether a translation is required, who may prepare it and what other evidence must be provided.

Can I rent a car with my original licence and translation?

The rental company decides. Ask it about licence language, minimum holding period, age, vehicle class, payment card and insurance conditions before booking.

Can the translation be used for licence conversion?

Sometimes, but conversion rules and accepted translation sources vary. Check the relevant licensing authority before ordering and tell us the exact conversion application.
