Do You Need a Birth Certificate Translation for an Australian Passport?

A non-English birth certificate required for an Australian passport application needs a complete English translation stamped by an accredited translator.

In Australia, use a NAATI-certified translator. For an overseas application, use a translation service approved by the Australian mission handling your application.

When does a passport application need a birth certificate?

Children applying for an Australian passport in Australia need a full original birth certificate. An overseas-born child whose certificate cannot be obtained has a B6 declaration and supporting-evidence pathway. Adults born overseas can establish gender and place of birth with a citizenship certificate showing both; an accepted document must supply any missing detail.

A birth certificate is therefore not required for every adult application. Bring the required originals and their translations to the passport interview; a translation PDF does not replace an original birth certificate.

Application situation What to check before ordering a translation
Adult born overseas: citizenship certificate shows gender and place of birth The citizenship certificate can provide both details. A birth certificate is not automatically needed to prove them.
Adult born overseas: either detail is missing The Passport Office lists a foreign birth certificate with an English translation, a foreign passport or another official document showing the missing information as evidence options.
Child passport application in Australia Prepare a full original birth certificate showing the child’s full name at birth and the parents’ names, plus the required citizenship evidence. Translate the certificate if it is not in English.

Who can translate the certificate in Australia or overseas?

For an Australian passport application lodged in Australia, use a NAATI-certified translator for the non-English birth certificate. The Passport Office requires a complete English translation bearing an accredited translator’s stamp. For an application lodged overseas, arrange the translation through a service approved by the Australian diplomatic or consular mission handling the application.

A translation already checked by the Australian Passport Office can be used again for a future passport application.

Before ordering, check the translator’s NAATI Certified Practitioner Number and language direction.

What original documents and translation details should you prepare?

A birth certificate translation for an Australian passport must cover the whole document. Send every relevant page with readable names, dates, places, parents’ details, issuing information, stamps, seals and notes. Keep the original certificate ready for the passport interview, even when the translator works from a clear scan or photograph.

For a child’s passport application, both parents’ documents do not need translation simply because they are the parents. Translate each non-English document the application actually requires, including a marriage or name-change document when it is needed to connect names or establish the required family details.

What if the birth certificate and passport evidence show different names?

A birth certificate translation must faithfully represent the name on the source document. A translator should not silently replace that name with a later name or preferred passport spelling. Give the translator the relevant spelling information and prepare the marriage, change-of-name or other linking evidence required for the passport application.

Translation and name-linking evidence have different roles: the translation explains what the birth certificate says; the linking documents explain why the applicant’s records use different names.

Does the same rule apply to an Australian visa?

An Australian passport application follows Australian Passport Office requirements. An Australian visa application follows Home Affairs requirements, including its own rules about translator details and document submission. For a visa, use our separate birth certificate translation guide for Australian visa applications.

Do You Need a NAATI Birth Certificate Translation for an Australian Visa?

Translate a birth certificate only when the visa’s document checklist requires it.

Home Affairs requires English translations for non-English supporting documents. If the translation is completed in Australia, include the translator’s NAATI practitioner number. If it is completed outside Australia, include the translator’s full name, address, telephone number and qualifications in the language being translated.

Submit both the original-language document and the English translation.

The Home Affairs rule, in plain English

Home Affairs separates two questions:

  1. Does this visa application require a birth certificate? Use the document checklist for the specific visa and applicant.
  2. If the required document is not in English, what translation details are needed? Apply the translator-location rule below.

Official guidance: Home Affairs — Check twice, submit once and Home Affairs — English translations of documents.

Which translator rule applies?

Where the translation is completed What Home Affairs requires
In Australia Use a translator accredited by NAATI and include the translator’s NAATI practitioner number.
Outside Australia NAATI accreditation is not mandatory. Include the translator’s full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language being translated.

What to submit

  • the original birth certificate in its source language;
  • the complete English translation;
  • the translator details required for where the translation was completed;
  • the other identity, relationship or civil-status evidence listed for the specific visa.

A translation explains the source document in English. It does not decide whether the birth certificate is required, prove visa eligibility or guarantee the application outcome.

What if a government office has already issued an English birth certificate extract?

An official document already issued in English does not need translation simply because a related original-language birth record also exists. The separate question is whether that English extract is the document required by the visa checklist and whether it contains the identity or parent details requested for the applicant.

Compare the exact document name and contents with the checklist for your visa or the written request in ImmiAccount. Do not assume that every English extract replaces a full birth certificate. If Home Affairs requires a different birth record and that document is not in English, submit that original-language document with its English translation under the translator-location rules explained above.

What we check before translating

At quote stage, we confirm the document type, issuing country, source language, required English direction, intended visa use, passport spelling, required pages and deadline. The translation follows the source document; a spelling difference is not silently rewritten as if the source said something else.

For a translation completed in Australia, the delivered document shows the NAATI-certified translator’s practitioner details. You can check the translator’s CPN in NAATI’s official certification tool.

Passport and visa uses are separate

A passport application follows Australian Passport Office rules, not a visa checklist. See the separate birth certificate translation guide for Australian passport applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a NAATI translation mandatory for an Australian visa?

For a translation completed in Australia, Home Affairs requires a translator accredited by NAATI and the translation must include their NAATI practitioner number. For a translation completed outside Australia, NAATI accreditation is not mandatory; include the translator’s full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language being translated.

Can I translate my own birth certificate for a visa?

Use a translator who meets Home Affairs’ rules for where the translation is completed. In Australia, the translator must be accredited by NAATI. Outside Australia, each translation must include the translator’s full name, address, telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language being translated. Submit both the original document and the translation.

Does the translation need to be certified or notarised separately?

Translation, notarisation and Apostille are separate processes. Follow the document checklist for your specific visa and any additional request from another receiving institution.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

We translate Chinese birth certificates for a fixed $39 (Taiwan $43.99, Malaysia $75) with 12-hour PDF delivery; other countries are quoted before we start. See our NAATI birth certificate translation from $39 service page.

  • 戶籍謄本完整清晰彩色掃描,包括背面、續頁、章戳與記事;
  • 所有需要出現在譯文中的相關人護照英文姓名;
  • 接收機構的文件清單、補件信或有關翻譯範圍的段落;
